‘POINT OF CONTACT’

Artists: Paweł Matyszewski, Sergey Schabochin

The project is a multi-tiered reflection on the concept of border, division, and difference. It explores interpersonal relations, potential tensions, interdependencies, and mutual intentions. It refers to borderland objects, associations, and infrastructure. The border suggests also the transgression of social norms and the evolution of modern family structures.

It is interesting to see how unruly state borders can be, especially along small rivers, such as the border along the rivers Świsłocz and Leśna Prawa. Today, several decades after state borders were drawn in the wake of WWII, their cartographic delineation has widely diverged from the natural course of these rivers, as they undergo continuous transition.

The exhibition “Point of Contact” looks at the borderland between Poland and Belarus from both sides of the border. History and nature are the backdrop of modern human problems.

Paweł Matyszewski

Born in 1984 in Bialystok. He graduated with an MA in painting from the Poznan Academy of Fine Arts under professor Piotr C. Kowalski. Works by Pawel Matyszewski obsessively circle around the impermanence of human life and natural phenomena. He is fascinated by the changeability and fragility of the human environment as well as marginal events which arouse extreme emotions. His works, which border on both realism and abstraction, seem akin to the fabric of the human body.
